Your rights at work

You have a right to be safe at work.

You have the right to ask your employer for the support you need to:

  • be safe
  • do a good job.
A rights document

These supports can include:

  • assistive technology – devices that help you do your job, like screen readers
  • extra time to read information
  • desks that can move
  • comfortable chairs
  • ramps and lifts
  • accessible toilets.

When something is accessible, everyone can use it.

This might be:

  • a place or a building
  • transport
  • a service
  • information
  • a website.

There is a list of national standards that organisations need to follow to make sure buildings and public spaces are accessible.

It’s called the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010.

Disability Standards document

This list says organisations need to make sure that:

  • people using a wheelchair can access things like:
    • buttons in the lift
    • door handles
  • lift buttons have braille
  • lifts tell people what floor they are on
  • there are clear signs of any hazards – something that might hurt someone
  • accessible parking is available.
