What is institutional violence?

Institutional violence is when groups or organisations are:

  • violent to you
  • try to control you.

Groups or organisations can include:

  • hospitals
  • schools
  • group homes
  • nursing homes.

Institutional violence can be when someone:

  • locks you away
  • ties you up
  • forces you to take medicine
  • treats you badly because of your disability
  • doesn’t let you make your own choices.
