What is sexual health violence?

Sexual health violence is when someone does not let you make your own choices about:

  • having sex
  • having a baby.

This is also called reproductive violence.

Sexual health violence can be when someone:

  • takes away your contraception – the products that help you have safer sex, like condoms
  • makes you have sex without contraception
  • makes you have a baby
  • makes you have an abortion – a small surgery that takes the embryo or foetus out of your uterus.An embryo or foetus are the very early stages of a baby.
  • makes you have surgery to stop you from being able to have a baby.
  • makes you take medication to stop your period

This is called sterilisation.
