Laws that protect children

Child Protection is a government agency that works to keep children safe.

If Child Protection thinks a child isn’t safe, they will take them away from the family that may be:

  • hurting them
  • not taking care of them the way they should.

Parents with a disability have a higher chance of having their children taken away than parents without disability.

If Child Protection contacts you about your child, you should get support from:

  • an advocate – someone who helps you to speak up for yourself
  • a community legal service.

You can find an advocate at the Disability Advocacy Finder website.
