Sexually transmitted infection screening

A sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening is a test to see if you have an STI.

An STI is an infection you can sometimes catch when you have sex with another person.

You might have an STI if:

  • you have fluid coming from your vagina, penis or bottom that isn’t normal or smells funny
  • it hurts to go to the toilet
  • you have sores, blisters, lumps, warts or rashes on your vagina, penis or bottom.

You should have an STI screening every year if you are having sex.

At the STI screening, you might:

  • tell your doctor about the sex you have had
  • get a blood test
  • give your doctor some urine in a container
  • let the doctor take a sample from your throat, vagina, penis and bottom
  • let the doctor check your vagina, penis or bottom.

You will usually find out the results from tests in a few weeks.
