Your rights in prison

If you go to prison, you still have rights.

You have the right to:

  • food
  • water
  • shelter
  • warmth.

You have the right to get health care you need.

This includes treatment for your:

  • physical health
  • mental health.

You have the right to assistive aids.

Assistive aids can:

  • make it easier to do things

  • keep you safe

Assistive aids might be a:

  • piece of equipment
  • system to use.

You have the right to see people who visit you.

You have the right to be treated with respect.

This includes being safe from:

  • violence
  • being treated badly

discrimination – when someone treats you badly because you are different

You have the right to learn and develop new skills while you are in prison.
